Step back into one of the most fascinating and little-known chapters of Arkansas history during a special free presentation of The Western District on Sunday, July 19, at 2:00 PM in the historic Crystal Dining Room at the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa.

Written by Dr. Brandon Chase Goldsmith, The Western District explores the true story of the congressional investigation into corruption within Fort Smith's federal court during the 1870s. The production follows Secret Service Agent L.B. Whitney, who goes undercover to uncover widespread corruption involving the federal judge, U.S. marshal, and deputy marshals, aided by fearless journalist Helen Corwin Pierce as they risk everything to expose the truth.

The play holds a special connection to Eureka Springs. Dr. Goldsmith spent more than a year and a half revising the script while in residence at the Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow, where his research uncovered surprising links between the Fort Smith scandal and the founding of Eureka Springs—including the men involved in developing the Eureka Improvement Company, the railroad, and the construction of the iconic Crescent Hotel.

Following the performance, Dr. Goldsmith will continue his research on a sequel that explores Eureka Springs' remarkable transformation into one of America's premier Victorian resort towns between 1883 and 1886.
