Opera in the Ozarks proudly launches a new year-round film series with the cinematic opera Goodbye, Mr. Chips, composed by Gordon Getty and directed by Brian Staufenbiel. This moving adaptation of James Hilton’s beloved 1934 novella tells the story of a devoted schoolteacher whose lifetime of service becomes a touching testament to love, loss, and the enduring power of education.
The film stars Opera in the Ozarks alumnus Nathan Granner as Mr. Chips, alongside Marnie Breckenridge (Kathie), Lester Lynch (Merrivale), and Kevin Short (Ralston and Rivers). The Young People’s Chorus of New York City brings youthful vibrancy to the story as the students of Brookfield, accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by Nicole Paiement.
Following the screening, tenor Nathan Granner — now an internationally acclaimed artist — will appear live on stage for an intimate conversation about the making of the film and his artistic journey.
“Launching this new film series in our new theater — with one of our own alumni at its heart — feels like the perfect way to extend Opera in the Ozarks’ spirit into the year-round calendar,” said Nancy Preis, General Director of Opera in the Ozarks.
This event marks the first in an exciting new series of opera-related film presentations at Opera in the Ozarks’ brand-new multimillion-dollar theater, just west of historic Eureka Springs.
