Cne’ Breaux and Ilene Powell, Ko-Kaptains of KdK, have formed Eureka Springs’ newest Mardi Gras Krewe. KdK is having its first wine dinner at Cottage Inn on Saturday, February 11, 2017 to benefit Clear Spring School. Cne’ and Ilene wanted to take their passion for food, wine and revelry and create an event to give back to the community.

Ilene shares, “I remember growing up in New Orleans and having Mardi Gras Shoe Box decorating contests in grade school and having parades around the school yard. I wanted to bring that aspect of Mardi Gras to Eureka Springs. Mardi Gras is very much a family affair in NOLA. It made perfect sense to start off KdK with an event that not only raises money for CSS, but teaches the students another tradition of Mardi Gras. We wanted to encourage the growth of Eureka’s future artists and revelers so that Eureka Gras can continue to expand its offerings to locals and tourists, so Cne’ and I contacted CSS about a collaborative event. The creative minds of CSS will be constructing their Shoe Box Mardi Gras floats and will be auctioning them off at the dinner to benefit the school.”

Cne’ continues, “Eureka Springs is so special, and a Krewe dedicated to highlighting its food, wine, and love of fun is a natural addition to Mardi Gras celebrations here. Another Mardi Gras or Carnivale tradition is to give back to the community. In fact, early Krewes, as is Krewe du Kork, were known as Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs. To me, the notion of 'social aid' harmonizes well with Eureka's overwhelmingly generous nature while having a good time.”

Doors open at 5pm at the Cottage Inn to begin the viewing of the Mardi Gras Shoe Box floats decorated by Clear Spring School students. The wine dinner and silent auction will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person, of which $20 per ticket will be donated to CSS. Linda Hager is planning a menu that is typical of what New Orleanians feast on during Mardi Gras. Cottage Inn will also be sharing some lagniappe that evening with those attending the benefit dinner.

Krewe du Kork celebrates wine, spirits, food and fun. So if you love to spread cheer, join KdK in their festivities. Krewe du Kork will plan wine and spirits tastings, dinners, and other outings throughout the year. In addition to hosting social events, Krewe du Kork also promotes a sense of unity in the community and performs charitable works.
